Can Liposuction Cure Gynecomastia?
The word gynecomastia derives from a Greek word meaning "woman-like breasts." It
is a condition used to describe men who experience a swelling of the breast. For the men who experience it, it is sometimes an extremely awkward and embarrassing condition. Some teenagers experience a swelling of the breasts during puberty, and junior high and high school kids are notorious for how they can pick on their peers. Older men who experience a swelling of their breasts often find it similarly embarrassing. Some specifically avoid events or activities where they would have to remove their shirts.
A lot of these men have heard that liposuction (also called suction lipectomy and lipoplasty) can help to slim one's figure and remove excess fat, and they wonder whether or not the surgery could help them to have a more masculine and socially acceptable physique. This article will explain what liposuction is, and addresses when the procedure can help assist in removing the swelling of the male breast.
Although people often lump all swelling of the male breast under the term gynecomastia, there are actually a couple of different factors that can be at play. Technically, the term gynecomastia is reserved for cases in which there is actual growth of glandular tissue. In both men and women, the breast area is composed of several components. There is underlying muscle, adipose tissue (or fat) and glandular tissue. Typically, in men, the glandular tissue remains small and undeveloped. However, in some cases, hormonal imbalances or other problems can cause the breast tissue to expand, resulting in gynecomastia.
Swelling of the male breast can also occur to the adipose component of the breast. If a man begins storing too much excess fat around his breast, he will end up with a condition that looks very similar to true gynecomastia. However, this condition is typically called "pseudogynecomastia" or "false gynecomastia." Simply looking at a man's chest it may be difficult to tell whether the swelling is due to the fat layer or to the milk glands. However, a trip to the doctor and occasionally testing can usually establish what the root cause is.
Liposuction can remove excess fat, but not glandular tissue. As such, it can help to eliminate or minimize pseudogynecomastia, but it cannot fix true gynecomastia.
In a typical lipoplasty of the male breast, the area will be numbed, typically with some sort of local anesthesia. An incision will be made, and a hollow needle called a cannula inserted. The surgeon will move this cannula back and forth through the fatty tissue of the breast. As the surgeon does this, the cannula, which is connected to a vacuum machine, will break up and remove the excess fat.
If you experience an unwanted swelling of your breasts, consider seeing a liposuction surgeon in your area for a free consultation. Many surgeons offer free meetings to potential clients. After examining you and hearing of your goals, your surgeon should be able to help you know whether or not a lipoplasty could help to alleviate your condition.
