Can Medifast Lower My Cholesterol?

Recently, I had someone ask me if the medifast diet lowered cholesterol. The person who asked me was trying to lose weight for her health, but she also had concerns about high cholesterol and I suppose she hoped that she could cover both goals with one diet. I researched this topic for her and will share what I found in the following article.

Many Medifast Products And Foods Contain Soy Which Can Help To Lower LDL Cholesterol: Many people do not realize that much of the medifast foods (particularly the shakes) contain high quality, high protein soy. The particular type is called Supro which contains naturally occurring isoflavones which is said to offer several health benefits like increased bone strength, lower triglyceride levels, and kower LDL cholesterol.

High Protein Diets Are Often Questioned About Raising Cholesterol Levels (But Medifast Is Not Your Typical High Protein Diet:) When people ask me about this diet, I realize that not every one realizes that the foods in this plan are low in carbohydrates and high in protein. This helps your body to burn fat instead of carbs. And if this sounds familiar, that's because many other diets work under this same idea. Examples are south beach, the zone, and others.

But to me, there's a big difference between medifast and some of these others. If you've ever been on south beach and the zone, you know that you are a lot of meat, cheese and nuts. And there's been a lot of debate if consuming this much animal protein (and the fat associated with it) is a good idea as far as both good and bad cholesterol levels.

However, although this diet is a technically a high protein / low carb one, it doesn't have those issues. The meat and fat that you're eating isn't nearly as much as you'd have on the zone and you're limited to low fat / high quality meats. In fact, of the six meals that you eat per day, only the one "lean and green" meal (that you prepare yourself) consists of a larger serving of protein.

So while this is a high protein diet, I'd argue that it doesn't raise cholesterol like some and that it's possible that because of the soy content, it actually could lower it.

I also know from my own experience that I actually saw an improvement as did some others. But keep in mind that in addition to changing my eating habits, I also started to move more and just take much better care of myself also, which could have also contributed to my seeing lower cholesterol levels.
