Can Plastic Surgery Bring About A Change In Your Existing Relationships?

Plastic surgery is a very fast growing industry today

. There are procedures to improve or correct any defects in almost any part of the body. Some of the changes made by cosmetic surgery can be very dramatic and can impact much more than just one's appearance. They can also affect a person's self-confidence and by extension his or her relationships with other people.

People seeking to change something cosmetically about their bodies do so either because the cosmetic defect is also a health concern (like droopy eyelids or cleft palates) or because they want to look more attractive (like with face lifts, breast implants, and liposuction.) Typically these real or perceived defects can cause people to feel poorly about themselves, lowering their self-confidence around others, both friends and strangers.

This can cause plenty of interpersonal relations difficulties. In the process of correcting body blemishes that diminish self-esteem through plastic surgery, individuals often gain new confidence that changes their relationships with their family, friends, co-workers and people in general.

For example, children who have been the brunt of teasing by their peers because of their physical defects can suddenly find relief from bullies (although no surgery can guarantee freedom from childhood teasing!).

Surgeries like ear pinnings and the correction of deformed limbs or facial features can help children feel more confident in their appearance, giving them more confidence in their social and even academic relations. Of course, the surgeries will not necessarily change the people around them, but the children may act differently when they are perceived in a new light by others.

And with adults, studies have shown that people who are considered more attractive often favored when it comes to being hired, receiving promotions and recognition at work, and are generally perceived at more intelligent and successful.

So in this case, individuals who have plastic surgery performed may start to notice a difference in the way strangers treat them, although their relationships with family and close friends may not change much. In some cases though, just having greater self-confidence from cosmetic surgery can improve the way people deal with even their immediate circle of people.

Patients considering plastic surgery should realize and be prepared to accept changes in relationships around them. The biggest change will probably be in the person receiving the surgery though, as they feel better about their appearance and their ability to maneuver in social and professional settings.
