What the heck?
Running, depending on your weight, how long you run and the intensity you run thirty minutes of exercise will burn around 300 calories.
Not bad, right? Burn an extra 300 calories a day and you'll lose a pound in around 12 days.
The problem is that running makes you feel hungry. You feel as if you've put in a serious workout and what do you do? You eat. And chances are you eat more than 300 calories in that meal, especially if that meal is fast food.
Even if you're smart and you have a small, healthy snack, many people often figure that because they've worked out that day they don't have to pay as close attention to what they eat. But you have to be careful because a 700 calorie meal after a run that burns 300 calories will leave you in the red.
What's the solution?
Well a strategic approach to eating definitely helps but so too does adding weight training to your day. Weight training doesn't make you feel as hungry and you can go on with your day without
starving.
Plus, you will continue to burn significant calories as your muscles heal over the next couple of days. You will even burn calories while you are sleeping!
So, what type of weight training works?
One of my personal favorites is circuit training, which is where you do 5-6 sets of a workout without stopping and then rest two minutes and repeat. For example, you could try a set of push ups, squats, jumping jacks, sit ups, and lunges. Shoot for 20 reps of each and repeat until you taste barf.
If you absolutely must run, you should consider interval running. For example, you may sprint for a minute and run at an easier pace for 2 minutes. This type of training has been shown to increase
fat-burning and takes far less time.
