Can You Get Too Much Fish Oil?
Is it really possible to take too much fish oil
? As with most things in life, yes it is possible. However, you should be just as concerned with the quality of the oils you take as well.
Common sense tends to take over and for most people the recommended daily dose of 2-4 capsules is optimal.
One problem you could run into from taking too many is thinning of the blood. These supplements help to stop the blood platelets from clotting and improve your cardiovascular health. If you are currently taking any medication for thinning your blood, then you should consult your doctor.
Other side effects of taking too much fish oil include a mild laxative effect and the prospect of those annoying fishy burps. However, the main problem comes from supplements that have not been distilled and which can carry traces of toxins from the fish.
Fish pick up the many pollutants from our rivers and oceans today like mercury, PCB's, dioxins, lead and arsenic which are stored in their flesh.
To save money, many supplements have not undergone molecular distillation. This process removes all the toxins to leave the oil pure and safe. Simply check the label or website to see otherwise you can ingest these and store up future health problems.
Using the right oils can maximize the benefits to you which include improved heart health, avoiding premature sudden death, lower LDL cholesterol, stronger immune system, protection against age related eye disease and even many cancers.
As the most important omega 3 fatty acid is DHA, you want as much as possible in your supplement. Look for a minimum of 270mg in each 1000mg standard capsule for the maximum benefits, especially for your heart and brain.
If they are pure oils, then you should confidently avoid any of those fishy burps as they tend to only come from stale, poor quality ones.
Ultimately, if you are taking a
quality distilled supplement as I have outlined, then you shouldn't overly worry about getting too much fish oil, just stick to the recommended amount.
