Can You Whiten Your Teeth at Home and Get Great Results

?

We've all seen the commercials and visited plenty of websites that highlight people with incredibly white teeth. The ads claim that if you just simply use their product you too can have a celebrity white smile. Many also claim that you will save the hundreds and even thousands of dollars you would normally pay with regular dentist visits. Is it true? Can you really get the same results from at-home teeth whitening products?

Understand that not all teeth whiteners are the same. There are some that come in toothpaste and there are others that are part of a kit. There are people who use lemon juice as a whitener, but I would not encourage someone to use it. The amounts needed to whiten your teeth with lemon juice could actually cause harm to your teeth, especially if you have sensitive teeth.

Toothpastes with whiteners have been around for years. Some side-by-side tests have been done to compare the expensive brands with the low-cost brands. Surprisingly, the lower priced brands often did just as good if not better than the much more expensive brands. The active whitening ingredient in toothpaste is peroxide. Baking soda is also included in many whitening toothpastes, however, it is more of a cleaner and deoderizer.

As far as whitening kits are concerned, both home and in-office, they are basically the same. The major difference is in the strength. These kits contain a gel which has a main whitening ingredient called carbamide peroxide. The strength ranges from about 1.5% to 44%. The gel system is much more effective at whitening your teeth than regular toothpaste. The gel is usually placed inside a mouthpiece, called a tray. The tray is molded to your own teeth in order to ensure a good dispersement of the gel onto the teeth. An even dispersement of gel will ensure an even whitening takes place.

For people with sensitive teeth, I highly suggest starting with a lower strength gel, such as 22% or less. Keep in mind, that a lower strength means more applications. You may still see great results, but it may take longer to achieve the same thing as a 44% gel. If you can tolerate a high-powered gel, by all means feel free to use a 44% strength.

The results you get at home are now comparable to those received at the dental office without the high cost. There are of course higher cost office solutions such as laser whitening. If you can afford laser treatment, it may be a good option for you. Just realize that there are much more affordable solutions out there which really are safe and effective to use at home.
