Can we always believe what the media tells us "Vitamin E"
Can we always believe what the media tells us "Vitamin E"
"Can we always believe what the media tells us"?
This is just my opinion but yet again we are being told a vital piece of information with no real evidence to back it up. In this case Vitamin E is linked to an increase of some strokes. "Some" they say.
The type of stroke that they are talking about is apparently called Haemorrhagic. Haemorrhagic strokes are known to be one of the least common types of stroke and is caused by a weakened blood vessel that supplies the brain. This blood vessel ruptures and causes brain damage.
The findings that have been reported conclude that Vitamin E increases the risk of this kind of stroke by 22%. But it is also contradicted that Vitamin E will cut the risk of Ischaemic Strokes, which is the most common type of stroke by 10%. Looking at those statistics, you can take from it what you want and make your own decision, until they go on to say that the level at which Vitamin E becomes harmful is still unknown.
"They" being the Harvard Medical School, Boston and INSERM in Paris.
I agree that these types of studies are vital and need to be carried out, but it has been published with no real evidence to inform the general public. The deputy director of the Stroke Association has commented saying that this is a very interesting study but also asks what is a high level of Vitamin E. "Don't you think that this should have been investigated during the study"?
Previous studies on Vitamin E consumption have concluded that taking Vitamin E can help protect from coronary heart disease, and other studies have found that taking Vitamin E in high doses increases the risk of death. "Surely money could be better spent on finding out what actually is a high dose of Vitamin E"?
And just to make us feel reassured, as always, they urge us to maintain a healthy life style!!!
