Can you get fit in the office? Exercise tips for the office environment


I work in an office currently, in what is possibly my most enjoyable job yet, but also the most sedentary as I am generally stuck at my desk all day in front of a computer screen. There is a gym across the road, but after work my head is frazzled that I simply cannot find the motivation to drag my sorry self onto the machines.

So I got to thinking how can you exercise in the office safely and without compromising your work requirements? I've compiled 6 suggestions below for exercise in the office.

1. Get out of your seat! Why not dedicate 5-10 minutes in the morning to do a few star-jumps or simple aerobics get the whole workforce involved, look a bit daft and have some fun. It's a great way to wake everyone up too.


2. Have a wander In your lunch hour, why not walk down to a local park that's a bit out of the way and get some fresh air. Just make sure you're back in time!

3. Take the stairs As many companies will be working above the ground floor, resist the temptation of the elevator and race up the stairs. I did some freelance work in some Euston offices on the 9th floor, which was quite a slog but definitely helped define my legs!

4. Walk/cycle to work A simple one, but therein lies the beauty. I only live 10 minutes or so from my workplace so it's not an issue for me, but obviously for those living an hour away, this is not feasible. Just consider it if you think you can make it on a bike, try it!

5. Keep a weight on your desk next to your obligatory stress ball or red stapler, why not keep a small weight? Lift it when you're reading information and help to tone your arms.

6. Your desk is your bench You can stay at your desk and still exercise you could squat, or do triceps dips, or even use it balance yourself when you stretch for exercise.

As well as these, you should aim to eat healthily pack your own lunches and resist the temptation of snacking whilst working, and you will soon feel the health benefits yet keep your productivity up.
