Canada - Snowboarding Guide
Canada's sheer size and northern position make it one of the best countries to snowboard and ski
. Ski and snowboarding resorts in Canada have grown in popularity due to it's amazing variety of runs, restaurants, bars and accommodation.
The evocatively named Kicking Horse resort is some two and a half hours west of Calgary, and boasts fine, soft powder snow against the dramatic backdrop of the Rockies. It boasts twin Alpine bowls and 106 runs in all, with an annual snowfall that ranges from 142 to 275 inches per season.
Sun Peaks is situated close to Kamloops in British Columbia. This boasts being the third largest skiing and snowboard resort within Canada, housing 3,200 acres of bracing powder soft terrain in all. The longest run is a whopping eight kilometres, with easy access provided by no less than twelve lifts. The annual snowfall here is in the region of 220 inches per year.
Mont-Tremblant is a French take on the theme. Ideally housed within Quebec province it benefits from only taking an hours drive from the airport in Montreal. Although the resort is stunning, it is more for tourists and novices as opposed to life long snowboarding enthusiasts. It has also gained a reputation for being expensive and over hyped. On the practical side, it has around 150 inches of snowfall per annum, covers around 253 hectares, and has sixteen ski lifts.
Le Massif has the added advantage of close proximity to the fairy tale city of Quebec. It holds breathtaking scenery over Baie St-Paul and St. Lawrence River, and is considered to be one of the best and challenging runs in all of Canada. There are 166 excellent hectares here, as well as five lifts and a snow fall of twenty feet per annum as well as lots of artificial snow. While the terrain might not seem overly daunting, the superb overall vibe more than compensates for this.
Banff is situated close to Lake Louise in Albnerta, and holds a fantastic triple flourish of snowboarding centres. A single tri-lift ticket gives you access to all three, and even allows for free transportation in the area. With an extended season that runs from November till May, the area comprises Norquay, Lake Louise itself, and Sunshine Village. Each area offers between five and thirteen lifts, housing 274 runs in total, which benefits from thirty feet of snowfall per annum.
