Canada- University Entry Requirements And Entrance Procedure

Canada, from past several years, has turned out into a big education hub for students across the world

. Since 1970s, the entry procedure to the colleges and universities in Canada has been a straightforward process, where students have to submit their provincial application service to the colleges for evaluation after mentioning and ranking the institutions as per their preference and submit their transcript to the institutions. In Canada, the admission is conducted on the basis of marks students have got. The criteria or the grade requirements by the Canadian universities and colleges for the applicants from Canada is less stringent than for the students from out-of-province.

In Canada, there is a much difference lies between the admission procedure from a college and an university, unlike in US, UK and other countries. The Canadian college is somewhat similar to a community college in America. The post-secondary institutions in Canada are funded by the government and has higher value than the institutes owned privately. The privately owned institutes are mostly located in British Columbia and were established in 1980s.

The general university requirements in Canada for admission in any of the offered programs are:

Completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognized university.

Good and fair academic record

Strong reference letters

Written Statements

Clearance in standardized tests like Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

For specialized programs like law, health science and architecture, applicants must have completed four years of study in university.

It is important to note that education system in Canada varies from province to province, so do the entry requirements vary from institutions to institutions. Therefore, students are advised to confirm directly with the institution(s) they want to get enrolled in.

The Canadian colleges are more into offering applied career courses like graphic designer or hotel management, while universities are geared for seeking individuals more into academic careers like Doctors, Lawyers, etc. The new session in Canadian colleges and universities starts during March to May, where sometimes admission procedure take unusually longer and stretches till the months of November to January due to several factors like, clearance of any document, late fee submission, etc. The international applicants are likely to get confirmation regarding offer or rejection by early April. Though getting admission at post graduate level is not that easy in Canada, but fee structure there is comparatively lower than other countries like US, UK and Australia.
