Cancer Zapper: My Experience As A Radiation Therapist

One disease that I have always been scared of is cancer

, because several of my family members have been diagnosed with the disease. Some say it is hereditary and others say it is from the lifestyle of each person. There are various reasons for my fear, but the main one is that cancer is eventually terminal. My personal experience with the disease also heightens my fear.

I grew up in a family of four with a younger sister. We lived in a quiet neighborhood, but our home was usually filled with laughter and joy. My parents always made us laugh and they had a positive outlook on life. They believed life could always be happy, even during the dark times. This changed when my mother passed away from cancer. I can still remember myself as a child asking, "Why does my mother have a disease that makes her leave us and changes our lives for the worse?" My father raised us alone and gave us all the care a father and mother could give.

Since cancer is prominent in my extended family, I decided to take up Radiation Technology. I wanted to help those who suffered like my mother. I also wanted to know more about the disease so I could understand it. My father was able to help me with some college expenses, so I grabbed the opportunity to attend school without hesitation. I finished my courses successfully, but it was not easy. I worked hard to attain the needed license and other qualifications.

One area where I did have problems was landing a job. What got me through this difficult time was hope. I never gave up hope because my mother taught me to hang onto hope at all times. After months of waiting, I finally landed a good job in a reputable hospital. I felt so blessed to have my position and to be able to help patients who were diagnosed with cancer.

After years of helping other people, I learned that my father had been diagnosed with cancer. My sister and I were so surprised and didn't know what to do. After fighting through the strong feelings of sadness, I gathered all my strength and just faced the problem. At present, my father is one of my patients. I am in charge of the treatment process that he will be having. He keeps me going in this profession, as do my other patients, because I can help them get better by doing my job. Every day I am excited because any day could be when I see my father get better. This experience of helping is enough to get me through the difficult areas of my job. It's not perfect, but it has more good than bad.
