Canon Pixma MP620 Printer Review
The Canon Pixma MP620 colour inkjet multifunction printer offers lots of storage space and connectivity options.
While its design has a few shortcomings, overall the Canon Pixma MP620 offers a good deal, especially for a busy home or school setting.
Several premium features differentiate the silvery Canon Pixma MP620. The control panel replaces a raft of buttons with a scrollwheel that lets you spin through options shown on the adjacent, tiltable, 2.5in colour LCD. The remaining buttons are clearly tagged and easy to use.
Standard connectivity features include a built-in WiFi, ethernet and USB, with an option to add an adaptor to enable Bluetooth. The Canon Pixma MP620 provides two media slots which is compatible to most cards, although you'll need to purchase a third-party adaptor to make use of the XD Picture Card format. Pictbridge port only accepts devices which are compatible with Canon.
The 150-sheet output tray automatically unfolds itself from the Canon Pixma MP620's front panel when you initiate a print job. You get two 150-sheet input trays: one underneath for letter-size plain paper, and a second in the rear for larger or thicker media.
Unfortunately, on our test unit, it took a lot of pulling and pushing to raise the telescoping guides for the reat verticle input, and we unintentionally collapsed them several times. One other setback of the Canon Pixma MP620 is the absence of an automatic document feeder (ADF) and duplexing capabilities.
Test results for the MP620 were encouraging. It printed an avarage of 7.6 pages a minute with plain text while graphics took an avarage of 2.2ppm. Black text was clear and dark when using the pigment black ink cartridge.
A dye based second black, cyan, magenta, and yellow is used for printing colour graphics. However, there's a bit of too much yellow in some of the colour graphics, particularly on flesh tones, appeared orangey on plain paper and a bit jaundiced on Canon's photo paper. Despite that along with slight graininess, images otherwise seem to be vivid and natural. Scan and copy tests yielded good results as well.
The Canon Pixma MP620 printer ink cartridges, two blacks, one pigmented (PGI-520BK) and a dye based cartridge (CLI-521BK) plus three colours makes a total of five inks.
This is the first time we have encountered a problem with Canon's normally solid documentation: the printed Setup Guide features a confounding flowchart about different installation options which slowed down the process rather than improving it. In addition to that, Canon's better-than-average score in our Reliability and Service survey bodes extremely well for your overall experience.
The Canon Pixma MP620 presents numerous features in a well-designed bundle. Its connectivity as well as generous paper handling makes it perfect for families or students.
