Provincial capital of Western Cape, Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa

In the year 2007, the air route between Johannesburg and Cape Town was declared as the fifth busiest route of the world and busiest in the whole of Africa.

A year after Tambo International Airport or Jan Smuts Airport opened at Witwatersrand, Cape Town International Airport opened in 1954. With this airport, the earlier airport was replaced. Initially two international flights were offered by this airport earlier known as D.F. Malan Airport- via Johannesburg, one flight to Britain and second one, a direct flight to Britain.

The airport underwent massive expansion and renovations to gear up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup preparations. At a cost of R1.6 billion, Central Terminal Building was developed. The building also linked domestic and international terminals that were earlier separate. A common check-in area was also provided. In November 2009, Central Terminals departure level opened and the rest of the building took some more time and opened in April 2010.

Since these days, the number of cheap flights to Cape Town has increased considerably; it was felt that the airport needed more expansion. After 2010 expansion, it was felt that a second runway should be constructed to handle large aircrafts coming here. The date for the project initiation has not been decided yet.

With modern split level design, the terminal building matches global standards. The departure hall is located at the upper level whereas arrivals are located at the lower level. A vehicular access is also provided with the help of an elevated roadway system. 120 check in desks and 20 self service kiosks are provided in the airport to handle passengers in a proper way.
