It's not difficult to find vibrant nightlife in "Cambodia", particularly in heavily visited destinations such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (which neighbours the Angkor Temple Complex). Bars and restaurants are plentiful, ranging from down-and-dirty drinking holes to smart cocktail bars. Outright nightclubs are few and far between, although girlie bars are anything but rare be sure to check a venue out before handing over a cover charge.
Most major hotels offer entertainment of their own, with properties in Siem Reap especially good at hosting traditional dance performances during high season. Gambling is a major pastime in Cambodia and there are several casinos in Sihanoukville and on the border with Thailand.
Siem Reap Nightlife
Most visitors to Siem Reap are more interested in daytime visits to the nearby temples than the town's nightlife but there's quite a lively night scene and for a good evening out there are several good spots worth checking out.
For starters, most of the popular bars are close to the Old Market and the river, down the appropriately named Pub Street' and the two best and noisiest nightlife places on this street areThe Angkor What? (the area's nightlife pioneer) andThe Temple Club, a full-on dance affair the Temple Club is complemented by theTemple Bar a few doors down.
There were only three bars here some ten years ago now there are around 40 establishments within a 200 metre stroll from the market so take your pick The Angkor What? is usually (and logically) the place that temple visitors frequent and is therefore quite busy and a good place to compare notes with other travelers.
Phnom Penh Nightlife
Early evening in Phnom Penh you can visit establishments like the Australian-ownedRubies Bar, frequented by young and well-heeled expats or theFCC on Sisowath Quay which has great views and good, if somewhat over-priced, food. TheCalifornia 2 Caf and Guesthouse is where expats and travelers meet and exchange information. These are generally quieter establishments.
Mid-evening places areThe Heart of Darkness which is reliable if you're looking for a happening place but somewhat over-hyped and enjoyable in a been there done it' way. About three blocks away from the new market isSharkey's Bar. Located upstairs, Sharkey's is a big and noisy place with an outside balcony and plenty of seating there is a good menu here and the place is safe for single ladies, even though it is somewhat of a pick-up joint for single guys.
Street 51 is also a good place to place to get a midnight snack.The Walkabout kitchen is open 24 hours round the clock and there are a couple of food wagons serving hamburgers and hot dogs in front ofHowie Bar and stay open till 4:30am.
For live music,Memphis Pub blasts out live rock n' roll and blues Monday through till Saturday, the lobby bar in upscale Intercontinental Phnom Penh has a Cambodian and Filipino band that plays pop music,Riverside Bistro has a mix of rock and ballads on selected nights and theBopha Phnom Penh Titanic is the place to go for a mix of live popular music and open mike.
Sihanoukville Nightlife
Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. Back when Phnom Penh was considered too dangerous for NGO officials they stayed here, resulting nowadays in a glut of hotel rooms.
Billed as a beach resort, also the county's main port, in reality the main raison d'etre is acasino destination. There are four casinos at Sihanoukville and they draw many foreigners.
There is quite a bit of nightlife in town especially in and around Ekareach Street and the port and beaches. Then there is theAngkor Arms and nearbySmall World along with a couple of other expat-run bars.The Snake Pit is between north and south Victory beaches and features bar top dancing and hard-to-find Russian vodka (the owners are Russian). Another universally popular bar is the24-hour G'day Mate which features ice-cold beer and a good menu along with rocking in-house music. For more laid-back nightlife stick to the beaches.
Battambang Nightlife
Cambodia's second-largest city, Battambang is the main hub of the Northwest, connecting Phnom Penh with Thailand. To put it succinctly, there is no nightlife in Battambang unless you count sipping fruit drinks by the river, in which case you should head to the Riverside Balcony Bar. Remember to remove your shoes when going upstairs. You may run across the occasional karaoke bar but this will be strictly local. This city, probably with much justification, goes to bed early.
