Car Colour Statistics
A decade ago, fifteen percent of the new cars that we purchased were green, showing that as a nation we embraced a colourful car. But over the last decade, statistics have shown that people are less likely to be buying a car in a bright colour, opting for more sombre choices like black and silver. Black cars represent twenty four percent of new cars purchased; white holds twenty percent of the market share, and grey, which encompasses silver and charcoal, takes thirty two percent of the market in new cars purchased. Colours like red and blue that were popular ten years ago have seen a decline in popularity. With interests waning in yellow, orange and other colours that were popular in the nineties, black and white are becoming a lot more prevalent on our roads. Fleet cars are consistently being purchased in neutral tones, as are cars in the public sector, like taxis. This could be because it makes then mess likely to stand out, so they are often less of a target to thieves and criminals.
PPG, the car paint firm who compiled the statistics, said that this is being mirrored across the rest of Europe, America and Asia. Volkswagen have even gone as far as to withdraw cosmic green' from their production line as it is now such an unpopular colour.
PPG manager Jane Harrington said: ""The palette of colours being developed is influenced by culture, nature, fashion, movies, media, electronics and many consumer products."
