Just five days before his nineteenth birthday in July 2006

, Wasim Mohammed, from Walsall in the West Midlands, was travelling in the passenger seat of his friend"s car when the latter attempted to overtake another vehicle at a junction. The move was not successful and in the resulting car crash, caused by the two vehicles clipping each other and Mr Mohammed"s friend"s car striking a wall at around 50 mph, he suffered serious neck and spinal injuries.

He is now tetraplegic, unable to use his legs at all and with limited movement in his arms. He requires round the clock attention from two full-time carers.
