Car Hire Vienna An Insider's Tips to Driving in Vienna's Streets
Ah, Vienna. Few cities in the world come close to the beauty and grandeur of this former seat of the Hapsburg court. But don't be blinded by its charm--navigating its streets can be quite challenging especially if you're driving a car hire Vienna for the first time. Here are some tips and tricks to help you survive Viennese streets.
Avoiding the A23 Sdosttangente
During rush hour, the A23 Sdosttangente gets clogged. Avoid this area if you need to go somewhere in a hurry.
Regulated Parking
Parking in the central districts is regulated so it pays to plan your trips to these areas carefully.
- Parking in specially marked areas and anywhere from district 1 to 9 is limited to 120 minutes, from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm Mondays through Fridays.
- Unless you can present a resident permit, you will need to pay a parking fee of 1.20 Euros per hour.
- The time you park is marked on a ticket called Parkschein. This ticket can be bought in tobacco shops.
Extending Your Parking Hours
What happens if you need to leave your car hire Vienna in the central districts for much longer than the 120 minutes allowed? You have four options:
1. You can leave your car at a commercially designated car park such as the Parkgarage or the Parkhaus.
2. You can book a room at a hotel that provides parking.
3. You try Park and Ride, which is available in the U-Bahn stations, for 2.70 Euros a day.
4. You can park your car in the outer districts.
The first two options are costly. Parkgarage Freyung charges 32 Euros a day--expect hotels to charge much more. My advice? If you don't mind a bit of walking, park your car hire in Vienna in the outer districts. The walk shouldn't be too unpleasant. You can stop by a cafe or two for strudels, sauerkraut, and Wiener schnitzel and a sip of the world famous Vienna roast. Enjoy!
