With twenty six million cars on the roads in Britain, it seems statistically sound that some people wouldn't know how particular parts of their car work, but breakdown specialist Green Flag have released damning information about drivers in the UK. It seems two and a half million drivers don't know where they would locate the spare tyre, and one in six women do not know how they would go about opening the bonnet. One in five men revealed that they wouldn't know where to find their spark plug, and thirteen percent of the nation's population wouldn't know where their dipstick was if they needed to locate it.

What is more worrying is that over two million motorists said that if the oil light came on, they wouldn't be able to identify it.

Over fifteen million people, which equates to forty four percent, wouldn't know how to attach jump leads to their car should it break down, and eight percent of the nation, or two and a half million don't have the first idea where the spare tyre is.

Philippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: "The research clearly shows that many of us have scant knowledge about our cars despite relying on them to go about our everyday lives. There are few things more boring than being stuck waiting for help and just by brushing up on some basic car maintenance knowledge, drivers could identify some simple problems before the frustration kicks in and they need to call us out for expert help."
