Car Supermarket ? Why not?
There is currently a lot of competition in the world of used cars these days
, with hundreds of different web-sites and car dealerships trying to get you to part with you hard earned cash, when all you want to do, is buy a car that is better than the one you have now, or in some cases (if you're lucky) a second car.
Where do you start?
First, you need to decide what car you want, you need to think long and hard about this. Does it fit the bill? Does it do what you want it to do? What are the running costs? Etc. If you walked into a car showroom and said "I'm looking for a car that can fit a couple of kids and the shopping in!" At most places, the salesman would rub his hands together and show you the car that will fit the shopping and the kids in, but would also make him the most money. If he is good, you would end up leaving with a receipt for your deposit, happy, having just bought a car that caters to your every need, or does it? It may well do, but does it do more than you need it to?
I know that the above statement is very general, but the point I'm trying to make is, you may be happy with the car, but, have you looked around? Could you have bought a different car that does everything you want, that's a lot cheaper? Could you have got a better deal? Some people are happy to walk into a car showroom and follow this route, which is fine, but I'm not one of them.
Once you have decided which car you want (that's usually the hard part), have a look around on the internet. You will generally find that the big car-supermarkets have the best deals on used cars; you sometimes will find that some Main-Dealers have some sort of offer on, but as a general rule the
car supermarkets are cheaper.
Do you get a better service from a Main-Dealer?
Yes, if you want to sit nice showroom with flowers, plants and leather sofas where everybody is donning a suit and tie and you get a nice company folder with your documents in, and yes, you may get a nice courtesy car if/when yours has a problem, that's ok, it all sounds nice, but is that worth the extra 500 - 2000 you can pay, and in some cases more! I suppose that is for you to decide.
Everybody seems happy to do their weekly/monthly shopping at the big supermarket chains, so why not do this when
buying a car? The car supermarket has a massive choice of cars, is less pretentious and cheaper, the sales people at car supermarkets are usually targeted on the number of cars they sell, not profit, so in turn, its in their interest to give you what you want, don't expect any extras thrown in or money off; the cars are usually priced to sell. The car-supermarket works on selling allot of cars with small profits, they usually buy in bulk to keep the cars as cheap as possible, so when you find a deal that suits, go and have a look, pick the car that's in the best condition and buy it!
As long as you do your homework before you buy, the car-supermarket is the best place to
buy a used car.
