Car & Truck Repairs The Basics

Don't be fooled by marketing initiatives that say: "Buy this car

, it's maintenance free!". It's true that automobiles of this generation don't require much upkeep as it did decades ago. It's also true that cars are machines that need minor repairs once in a while. The best an owner can hope for is low maintenance which, by all means, doesn't equate to neglect.

Gone are the days when, upon filling up the tank meant having a professional check under the hood. "Gas-and-go" drivers face the potential risk of wearing their vehicles at a much faster rate when they aren't aware of minor repairs needed to be done. Today, car owners have to be more conscious scheduling regular checks to prevent small kinks into becoming major mayhem.

Regular checks prevent premature wear in components that are prone to it. These include the motor oil, filters, brakes, various engine, and automatic transmission fluid, to name a few. Recommendations on how often car maintenance checks should be done are in the owner's manual. This usually depends on the time and mileage. It's best to schedule a visit to your mechanic based on these recommendations. Some car manufacturers advise owners to change some items after every 50,000 miles. These are: air filters, PCV valves, and engine coolant but this is best to do if you cover long distances in short periods of time.

There are recommendations given in a car owner's manual concerning when maintenance checks should be done. It's usually dependent on mileage and time. Professional mechanics agree that scheduling checks more often than what is recommended is actually ideal, even when the vehicle is new. When salesmen give their pitch about zero maintenance, you'd know better. Although it may vary, some manufacturers propose replacement of PCV valves, engine coolant and air filters after a distance of 50,000 miles. This mostly applies to high mileage drivers or for those who travel in long distances for short periods of time. Industry recommendations for oil change is between 7,500 - 10,000 miles, with the filter to be replaced every other oil drain. If mostly travel in short trips or consider yourself a stop-and-go driver you might want to do it more often than every 10,000 miles.

Smaller repairs save money than a major overhaul. Well-maintained cars run smoother and consume less gasoline. The cars then depreciate on a much slower rate, giving you a higher amount for its value when you trade it in with a newer model or simply when selling. In areas that require periodic emission testing, well kept cars need not worry of failure. In the end, the car owner is confident that the car is safe to use and dependable.
