, one must avoid carbohydrates and fats. Its not a question of how much carbs or fats you consume, its a question of which carbs and fats are good for you.

Carbohydrates and fats are essential to your well-being, just as how important protein and fibers are. So it is not advisable to totally cut back on carbs and fats since this will affect the general performance of your body. All you have to do is understand carbs and fats to identify the good from the bad.

Good Carbs versus Bad Carbs

First, you have to understand these two types of carbohydrates:


* High-Glycemic Carbs break down faster which raise your glucose levels. Your body then will use this broken-down glucose as fuel, while leaving your ingested fat unused. These unused fats get stocked up around waist which obviously gives you the flab in the long run.

*Low-Glycemic Carbs break down slowly and steady, so without excess glucose, your body then starts to utilize its stored body fat to give you fuel. When these stored fats are constantly used, then youll have no flab to worry about.

Another type of carbs, called fiber, promotes a healthier digestive system which contributes to your overall diet. Carbs also aid the proper functioning of your brain, kidneys and liver.

It is then obvious that you should stay away or at least limit consumption of high-glycemic carbs like pasta, white breads, puffed rice, bagels, sodas, candies and crackers; and it is healthier for you to eat more of low-glycemic carbs like nuts, yogurt, milk, grain-based cereals and oat meals.

Good Fats versus Bad Fats

Now that we are clear whether to eat or not to eat carbs, lets move on to your fat concerns. Like carbs, fats are important in your overall health. Good fats in general promote healthier heart and improved blood circulation. They also support the hormone-production process in your body, strengthen your immune system and enable your body to easily absorb nutrients like calcium and vitamins like A,D,E and K.

* Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats are good for you since they regulate the levels of good and bad cholesterol in your body. Foods rich in unsaturated fats are olive oil, canola oil, nuts like walnuts and pistachios, fish like tuna and salmon, and fruits like avocado.

* Saturated and Trans Fats are the ones you should stay away from. They increase the level of bad cholesterol in your body, thereby putting your heart at risk. These bad fats are commonly present in red meat, whole-fat dairy products, commercial breads, butter, margarine, cheese and fried foods.

See, there is no need to be afraid of carbs and fats. These explanations hopefully opened your mind. So for a more effective dietary program, you should start incorporating good carbs and good fats in your diet from now on.
