Carbs and Fat: The Eternal Debate

When it comes to diets, there are as many different opinions as there are sets of data. So many different studies have been done that people can assemble any kind of argument they want, with most people arguing in favor of either fat being awful for you or amazing, or that carbs are the death of society or its salvation. If you are trying to craft a good, healthy diet, which one should you take into account? Should you eat more carbs, or should you eat more fat? In today's article we're going to take a quick look at the issue, and try to give you some impartial advice based on facts and not just opinions.

First of all, let's be honest: we are all built differently. Some people are lactose intolerant, others can't stand caffeine. Some people have fast metabolisms, others slow. Some people need to eat a lot, others a little, and so it goes, so to say that carbs or fat are objectively and universally bad' or good' is to almost criminally over simplify what is in truth a very complex subject. The truth of the matter is that it often depends completely on your genetics, your goals, your age, sex, metabolism and activity level. So keep that in mind during the rest of this article.

Next, let's look at a basic fact: you do not need carbs in your diet to survive. Your body can survive solely on protein and fat, and this is because we possess the ability to generate the little amount of glucose we absolutely need in the form of ketones. Does this mean we don't need carbs? We don't, but we'd be miserable not eating them. Most people feel absolutely awful during ketosis, which in itself is an argument in favor.

But how much? Many dietary requirements say that we need our diets to be at least 50% carbs. Why is this the case if we can live without them altogether? The same goes for fat. Our bodies can survive without dietary fat as long as a tiny amount of fish oil. So where do we stand there? What is the optimal balance?

The truth as with most things is that neither in extreme quantities is needed or good for you. Moderation as always is key, so rather than eating tons of one and little of the other, try to balance your fat and carb intake for optimal health.
