Cardiac Angioplasty: What Is It

Cardiac angioplasty is a procedure commonly used for people that are suffering from a certain heart disease

This is for the doctor to immediately adjust whenever certain unexpected errors happen during the process.

The physician continues cardiac angioplasty by controlling the catheters tip to pass through the coronary arteries with an endoscope that is found at the tip of the catheter. A special contrasting material called dye is injected after the tube goes through the heart so images can be seen through X-ray. After locating the position of the plaque, a secondary tube containing a tiny balloon follows the catheter. This is then inflated in the position of the plaque to flatten it and widen the artery, resulting in an increased amount of blood flowing through the heart.

At this point of cardiac angioplasty, the patient will feel a sudden pain in the chest during the balloons inflation, which may last for about 30 seconds to a minute. After the balloon does its job of flattening the plaque, it is then deflated and the pain will then subside. A tiny tube called a stent may be placed in the position of the plaque to support the widened artery to keep it from narrowing.

If there is only one artery that needs to be widened, the procedure may take about 30 minutes. After the procedure, heavy lifting is prohibited as long as the wound created by the catheter in the skin is healed.
