The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set for 2010, which goes into effect on January 1, includes several changes of interest to cardiology coders. So as a cardiology coder, you have to stay alert and informed about the
new 2010 CPT codes so that you dont lose out on your reimbursements.
Among the many changes pertaining to cardiology coding, CPT does away with 36145, 75790, and instead asks you to consider 36147, +36148. That apart, CPT 2010 deletes the myocardial perfusion imaging codes that youve been using and replaces them with new appropriate codes. As such, 78460, -78465, +78478, and +78480 goes out of the window and a new set of myocardial perfusion imaging codes finds its way - 78451, 78452 78453, 78453, 78454.
Whats more, CPT has decided to give a facelift to cardiac MRI codes 75557-75564, which made their debut only two years ago. CPT 2010 deletes all of the 2009 cardiac MRI codes that specify flow/velocity quantification (75558, 75560, 75562, 75564, Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging ).
Moreover, one of the new category III codes that is being implemented is 0206T. For 2010, CPT also adds +0205T, which describes a relatively new technology such as InfraRedx, which physicians may use to identify lipid or cholesterol deposits in the vessel wall.
As a cardiology coder, you will be in a tight spot if you are not aware of the new
2010 CPT codes relating to your specialty. You should therefore try to master the CPT changes; if you dont, you may well head toward denials and lost revenue.
One way to get on top of these changes is by signing up for a one-stop medical coding guide, which will show you the way as far as these new CPT codes for 2010 are concerned, and in the process help you stay ahead of the rest.About the Author:
