Care And Maintenance Tips For Your Canvas Luggage
Traveling can make your canvas luggage dirty
Traveling can make your canvas luggage dirty. Moreover, it acquires a few damages when airline companies handle your checked luggage roughly. These bags do not come cheap. You should prolong its life so you will not end up buying a new one any time soon.
Care and maintenance for canvas luggage is not that difficult. Here are a few tips that can help you out:
1. Remove stains immediately
If it is completely made up of canvas, you can wash it using your washing machine. However, if there are leather accents to your bag, you would want to spot-treat the area only. When washing it in your washing machine, use a mild detergent. Use cold or warm water settings. Do not use the high settings as this might fade the color of the bag. Set the washer up to delicate cleaning cycle. Hang it up to dry completely.
If you are going to spot-treat the area, try mixing mild detergent with water. Get an extra toothbrush. Use the toothbrush to scrub the soapy water onto the stained areas of the bag. Scrub the area gently until the stains have come off. If the stains are crusty and difficult to remove, treat the area with a stain remover and leave it there overnight. It will loosen up the stains and will make them easier to get rid of.
2. Remove unwanted luggage smell
If you don't have the time to completely clean your bag and you want to get rid of the unwanted smell, try using baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda all over the bag, especially on the smelly areas. Let it stay there for about an hour. After an hour, use a handheld vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda particles.
3. Try repairing broken stitches
If there are broken stitches, repair them immediately. Use a sturdy needle. Also purchase the right thread color. Stitch the damaged areas.
Inspect the inner stitching as well. If the stitches of the inner pockets are damaged, try repairing them. Also repair loose buttons.
4. Replace broken zippers
If there are any broken zippers that can no longer be repaired, you can try replacing them. Get the appropriate size and length of the zipper and purchase a replacement. Carefully cut off the stitches of the old zipper. Once you have removed the old one, place the new one. Get small pins to pin the zipper in place. Sew the edges of the zipper. After completing this task, remove the pins.
Keeping your canvas luggage in top condition should not occupy a lot of your time. These simple maintenance and repair tips can already help prolong the life of your bag.
