leather jacket. The very first thing you should do to your new leather jacket, or any other leather accessory, is to apply a protector to it.
Protecting Leather / Waterproofing
Leather has oils in it that naturally help make it soft. Leather is porous, so you can make leather water resistantonly, not waterproof. You should avoid from getting leather wet as much as possible as that can affect the leather. Get a bottle of leather protector, there are many brand names. Test a small area first to see if it will discolor the leather.
Avoid ones that go on thick or seem to have grease as it will plug the leather pores. Again you cannot make leather waterproof. What you are doing is trying to make it water resistant so it does not dry up and crack. It also protects it from discoloring from spills and drying out. Follow the directions on the bottle.
Conditioning
This is stuff that you rub into the leather to replenish the natural oils in the leather, this makes it soft.Make sure liquid protector is not petroleum or mineral oil based as that's bad for leather. Test a small area and see if it discolors it. You should apply conditioner several times a year, or any time your leather jacket looks dry.
Cleaning Your Leather Jacket
From time to time youre going to clean your leather jacket. Get a cleaning liquid which is for leather. Again you do not want to leave any residue or build up on it. So test a small area first with it to see if it discolors the jacket.
Use a damp cloth to apply any excess cleaner around stitching and places it may build up. When done hang it up and make sure it's dry before wearing. Those are the basics of maintaining and cleaning your leather jacket. Now lets go over some use and care areas.
Care Of Your Leather Jacket
Avoid as much as you can from getting wet your leather jacket. If you do get it wet, air dry it as soon as possible away from any heat. If you really got it soaked, then apply conditionerafter drying. Do not store leather items in plastic, it collects moisture. Keep leatheraway from humid areas.
Sometimes leather can start to grow mildew. This does not mean itsruined;you just have to remove the mildew. Make a mix of 50% water and 50% rubbing alcohol, dip a washcloth in it and apply it to the mildew area. Also you can use mild soap with a germicide and wash the area with it.
That's the basics of cleaning, protecting and maintaining your quality leather jacket. The biggest thing as you can see is keeping your leather jacket dry, while not exposing it to extreme heat.
