A Feature writer
1.)Writes detailed stories or presents commentaries on specific news topics
2.)Research and analyse facts and draw conclusions on a particular topic. Feature writing is more descriptive and detailed than news reporting.
A Columnist or Critic
1.)Writes a regular segment within their particular interest category, e.g. gardening, fashion, politics, and films.
2.)Usually projects a point of view, and could either be a commentator or a critic
3.)They review developments in special areas they write on & may contribute to a number of newspapers at the same time.
Personality Traits
1.)Well read, have adequate knowledge in his respective field
2.)Experienced and reputed as an expert in a particular field
Camera
The Job: A Photo Journalist or Camera Person
1.)Accompanies reporters on assignments to take pictures that support a news story, feature or interview.
2.)Is quick and alert to capture a moment, often working under difficult conditions
3.)Has good knowledge about technical aspects of camera like lighting, speed etc.
4.)Creative instinct for what makes a good visual story
Job Prospects
1.)Newspapers, periodicals and magazines, central information service, press information bureau, websites
2.)Some examples: AIR and TV channels like NDTV, Aaj Tak, ZEE TV, Star TV, Doordarshan etc.
One can freelance as a writer or columnist or even a special correspondent. Of course, building a freelance career takes a lot of experience and reputation.
Salaries and Remuneration
The minimum starting salary as per government directive has to be
1.)Reporters / Camera Rs. 5500 to Rs. 9000 per month
2.)Editors Rs. 7500 to 12000 per month
Special / Senior Correspondents and Senior or Chief Editors could earn anything from Rs 5 lacs to Rs 25 lacs per annum. Actual salaries offered depend on the company one is working with, and can be anything from very high to very low.
Study Routes: till recently, any regular graduate could be as a trainee in a news organisation and work his or her way up. However, most TV channels and newspapers demand a specialised degree in journalism or camera. Career paths and salaries are better and smoother for those with professional training. While both undergraduate and post graduate courses are offered in journalism and mass communication, postgraduate courses are more reputed and valuable in the eyes of employers.
