Caring For A Leather Handbag
Leather handbags cost a great deal of money, so it makes sense to keep them clean and in good shape
. Good care ensures the handbag will last a long time with no discoloration, cracking or other damage.
Consult any directions that come with a leather handbag. Most companies that produce expensive leather bags include care instructions. If the handbag does not have any, there are still steps to take that keep it looking its best.
Cleaning
Never clean a leather bag with dirty hands or use dyed cloths. Leather absorbs oils from the body, which can cause stains on leather. Also be sure to dry hands well before cleaning as water creates spots. Dye from coloured cloths can transfer to the leather, so always use a white, natural-fibre cloth. Always follow the directions on the cleaning agent to the letter. Apply the leather cleaner to the cloth, not the bag, and rub in a circular motion in an inconspicuous spot. Wipe with a clean cloth and, if there are no adverse effects, clean the entire bag.
Conditioning
Cleaning a leather handbag does not protect the bag alone. Apply leather conditioner that prevents the material from drying and cracking. Again, test a small inconspicuous area before conditioning the whole bag. Apply conditioner to a clean, white cloth and rub in circles. Let it dry before proceeding with the entire bag. Do not use conditioner on patent leather.
Stains and Water Damage
Use chalk powder to remove organic stains from leather. Crush and apply chalk to the stain and let sit for twelve to twenty-four hours. Dust it off with a clean cloth. The chalk should soak up the stain. Be careful about carrying cosmetics in a leather bag. Store them in another plastic zippered bag that will not allow liquid or powder cosmetics to escape and ruin a leather handbag.
Water damage leaves leather bags discoloured. If there is water damage, absorb as much water as possible with a white cloth or towel. Never use a hair drier on leather, instead let the bag air dry then clean and condition. It is best not to carry water bottles in a leather bag or use a leather bag during severe inclement weather.
Storage
Stuff leather bags with bubble wrap, or crumpled plastic shopping bags, in order to retain shape while in long storage. Place bags in a dust cover or in a white pillow case to prevent them from accumulating dust.
Other Suggestions
Leather protective sprays do protect handbags from rain and other damage. Test the spray in an inconspicuous area first and let dry to see if it discolours the bag. Avoid placing ink pens in a leather bag. Instead place them in a heavy zippered bag so if they leak, they will not damage the handbag.
Most leather handbags need two to three cleaning and conditioning sessions per year, depending on the use of the bag. With just a little work, leather handbags last for many years.
