Caring For A Teacup Chihuahua

In the past 10 years, the teacup Chihuahua has really boomed in popularity as a household pet

, and for good reason they are loving, smart, and of course cute. But, owning and raising a pet as small as teacup Chihuahua requires special attention that many people are unaware of. If you're thinking of getting one, make sure you know just what this breed requires in order to stay healthy and happy.

Unless you're a breeder, then you may be under the impression that teacup Chihuahuas are a breed of their own. The truth is that teacups aren't a recognized breed by any major canine association. The terms was somewhat born in its own from breeders using it to sell puppies that were extremely small. Now, even though they aren't recognized, most people and breeders use them to describe Chihuahuas that are between 2 to 4 pounds.

Teacup Chihuahuas, being so small, require a bit more care when it comes to their health needs. Certain illnesses and physical injuries can put them at a higher risk for complications because of their size. If you're bringing a teacup puppy home for the first time, one of the most important things you'll need to do is to take them to the Vet to get their first booster shot and schedule the next ones. Booster shots are vaccines that will immunize your teacup against many dangerous parasites and illnesses such as the Parvo virus and tape worms.

Bringing a teacup puppy into your home for the first time requires preparation beforehand. You'll need to make sure the house is safe from potential dangers that could harm them. Check to make sure all pesticides, chemicals, and cleaning solutions are safely tucked away and out of your teacups reach. Next, create a good bedding area for your teacup. I suggest a small bed with some blankets and toys nearby.

When it comes to feeding any dog, I always recommend using premium dog food. For your teacup, ask the breeder what type of food they've been feeding them. As long as it's a premium, healthy blend, continue using it.

If you have children or larger dogs, you'll need to make sure that they are going to be separated from your teacup. I suggest keeping your teacup in a pen-like area of the living room until they have become accustomed to each other.

Be prepared to spend some time potty training your teacup. Just like any household dog, teacups require consistent daily training in order to learn how to use the bathroom outside. The most important part of potty training is rewarding good behavior and being consistent. Take your teacup out several times a day to do their business, when they are good, give them a treat. If their having issues with going to the bathroom inside, try to confine them to one area of the house where you can see them. Most Chihuahua try to venture off to do their business and wont do it in a confined area.
