, but are easy to care for. Though most homeowners choose to have grass on their land, utilizing a ground cover is the easier way to go. Ground covers do not require an extreme amount of maintenance like grass does. If you have chosen to use a ground cover instead of grass, it is important to know how to take care of it.

When you decide on integrating a ground cover into your landscape, the best place to begin is with the soil. It is important to prepare the soil before you plant the ground cover. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this task. If you start early enough, add either moss or compost to the soil to give it the nutrients and vitamins that are required to grow a ground cover. If you are short on time, you can use a rake or cultivator to stir up the soil and add organic matter. If you decide to utilize this way of preparing the soil, be sure to remove any weeds that you may find. If at first you prepare the soil and plant your ground cover carefully, you will have plants that will be healthy for many years to come.

The next step that you will need to take after your ground covers have been planted for awhile, is to watch how they are growing. Your ground cover may grow much faster and more dense in some areas, and slower and more sparse in others. This will make your ground cover appear to be uneven. In order to even it out, you can move some of the plants around to fill in gaps that may have appeared. It is best to move the plants that look like they are growing out of control to the areas where the plants are not growing as well.

Along with transplanting different parts of your ground cover, you also need to keep an eye on it to watch out for weeds. It is important to make sure that your ground cover stays weed free. Just as with any kind of plant that grows in your yard or your garden, weeds can do some real harm. Weeds normally steal that nutrients from your plants, and can eventually destroy them if they are not taken care of right away.
