Caring For Kilts And Scottish Accessories

A clean cloth and water should be used to clean any small spots as soon as you notice them

. If they are particularly stubborn then a detergent specifically for wool items can be used.

Before taking your kilt to be dry cleaned, find out if your dry cleaner has cleaned kilts before.

To clean your kilt yourself put a small amount of wool detergent on them and leaving them for about 10-15 minutes, then fill the bath with a few inches of cold water add a couple of cap fulls of detergent. Once you have done that soak the kilt in the water for aroubd 45 minutes. Hang the kilt on the clothesline or kilt hanger and rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or shower attachment. Let the kilt dry naturally. Once dry use a steam iron with a pressing cloth and lightly press the edge of each pleat.

If you are looking for hard wearing and machine washable kilt then a polyviscose kilt is a great option. You can wash these kilts in a washing machine at 40 degrees, it's best to use a specialist wool detergent and avoid fabric conditioner; iron in the pleats on a medium iron setting. Do not bleach or tumble dry. Can also be dry cleaned. Whether you opt for a wool or polyviscose kilt make sure you store it correctly. To help preserve the pleats, fold your kilt into three - as if you were going to wear it - and hang it up by its loops ensuring that the pleats have enough room to hang straight.

If you need to transport your kilt outfit to weddings and other ocassions a kilt carrier is a good investment. It's also useful when storing items.After you've worn your kilt air it for an hour or two especially if you have been in a smoky atmosphere.

If your tweed jacket needs cleaning you should always have it dry cleaned, as the pure new wool can shrink if improper chemicals are used. It should be hung on a thick or padded hanger, when storing wrap in plastic and keep in a cool dark place where it can't be eaten by moths.

A regular polish will keep your ghillie brogues looking good as well as protecting the leather from the elements. Rub in the polish with a soft cloth, and allow it to dry thoroughly. Once the polish is dry, buff with a soft cloth or brush. Weatherproofing your leather brogues will help to protect them from the elements. Laces can be cleaned separately or replaced.

Avoid heavy cutting with the Sgian Dubh as this can cause mark the polished surface. Sgian Dubhs can be sharpened using a normal sharpening stone.

Pewter Clean your polished pewter using a in mild soap or detergent mixed with water, wet a soft cloth in the solution and wipe it over the pewter. Rinse with clean warm water and dry with a soft, dry cloth.

Bring the shine of polished pewter back by using pewter polish. Apply a small amount of polish onto a clean cloth. Rub over the pewter and then buff with a clean cloth.

To clean silver use a standard jewellers cloth to restore the shine.

The natural shine of horn can be restored, and small scratched removed by polishing with a jeweller's cloth.

To preserve wood items you should avoid extremes of temperature such as leaving the item in the sun or on top of a heater and avoid exposure to excessive water. Keep the wood looking good by occasionally waxing with wood wax
