Caring For Orchids

Planting Orchids has become a very popular hobby amongst flower growers

. However some gave up as they don't see the result that they hoped for. Unfortunately they left with the misconception that orchid is hard to grow. The fact is growing orchid is no harder than growing other flower plants. The key lies in knowing how to care for orchid and provide them with the right kind of environment.

You need not be a horticulturist to plant orchids, that's for certain. Many home growers have managed to grow beautiful orchids even in their apartments.

The first key is to find out the condition that is suitable for the species that you have. It is best to ask the seller and to choose the one that closely matches your home or office, depending on where you intend to plant them. Choosing the closest match ensure that you need not have to go through too much trouble like setting special room with temperature control etc. If you are given a orchid plant as a gift, then you can find out more about them through books or online and of course asking orchid growers or suppliers themselves.

As a rule of thumb, orchids thrive on places where the temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 Fahrenheit. It shouldn't be more than that. Anything above 90 Fahrenheit and you will see the buds falling. Another point is placing your plant where there is mild sunlight. Morning sunlight is the best. So you can put your orchid by the eastern window. Putting your orchid under harsh sunlight e.g. directly below the afternoon sun may stunt the growth of your orchids and even dry them up. Build a shade to cover your orchid from afternoon sun if it's not possible to place on the eastern side. If there's not enough natural light, you can also use artificial light, e.g. placing it under glowing light or fluorescent light.

The next point to note is to water your orchids when it is dry. Usually in the summer when it is hotter you need to water them more often. Orchids are watered a few times in tropical nurseries. However, if you don't leave in tropical weather and generally it is very cool, water when the growing material e.g. the bark are almost dry. This can mean watering once every ten days or twice a week when it is hotter. Remember to check the growing material as the number of days is just a guideline. Too much as well as too little water adversely affect your orchids. Too much water will make the plant rot, so be careful on this point.

Related to water is also the level of humidity. Orchids need high humidity. This is how it is in the tropical jungle. So place a saucer with some water near the plant if you live in areas where the humidity is lower than the natural orchid surroundings.
