The first contact lenses ever created were made of glass. These contact lenses caused the eyes to be irritated and were not suitable to be worn for extended periods of time. After these first glass contact lenses, a new type of lens was introduced. Made of Plexiglas, these "hard" lenses were much more convenient to wear, but also had problems; no oxygen could permeate through the lens to reach the cornea. Scientists dabbling in ophthalmology eventually made oxygen-permeable lenses.

With the introduction of the first soft lenses, lenses became more comfortable to wear. Soft lenses were immediately comfortable unlike the rigid lenses, which needed a period of adjustment before the lenses felt comfortable to the wearer. By 1999, silicone hydrogels' were introduced. These lenses were soft enough to be worn overnight because they had very high oxygen permeability.

Good contact lens care may extend the lifespan of your contact lens. It will also help protect and keep your eyes healthy. Below are some guidelines on how to care for your contact lens.

1. The first step in caring for your contact lens is making sure that you wash your hands well with warm water and soap. Do this before handling your contact lens and before you touch your eyes. After washing, dry your hands on a clean towel.

2. Contact lenses should be worn as prescribed by the eye doctor. Your ophthalmologist will specify when you should wear your contact lenses and for how long. This is based on the material your contact lenses are made up of.

3. Contact lenses, whether they are soft, toric or multifocal, should be washed, cleaned and stored in a clean case with fresh solution. Contact lenses need to be cleaned and washed so that the lenses remain clear and eyes are protected from bacteria, infections and other eye diseases. Only disposable contact lenses do not need to be washed and cleaned.

4. Make sure that your contact lens case is clean. Wash your contact lens case each time you are finished using it. Wash it with multipurpose solution, saline solution, and daily cleaner or warm tap water. Don't close the case if the inside is still wet.

5. Do not use plain tap water on your contact lens. Use the eye care products that your ophthalmologist recommended, which can be bought at any eye clinic.

6. Put your contact lens in the palm of your hand, pour some drops of eye cleaning solution on the lens and gently rub using your index finger. Some eye clinics are selling the new No rub' solution, which promises to clean your contact lenses without rubbing.

7. Keep your eyes always wet enough. Use a rewetting solution or even just a plain saline solution for this.

8. Be sure to go to your ophthalmologist and have your yearly regular eye check-up. He should be able to monitor if your contact lens needs changing or not.

Take care of your contact lenses so that your eyes remain healthy and free from any eye diseases, and your contact lenses remain in good condition throughout their life span.
