A guinea pig makes a great pet for any child over five years old. Although, an adult will have to help their child with caring for guinea pigs. Setting up the home

These pets do not need a lot of room to live in. Most pet shops sell special cages for a reasonable price, but a ten gallon aquarium will work just fine. When buying a cage, you will want to make sure that it has a solid floor so your pet does not trip up and injure their ankles accidentally. The new pet's home will need to be provided with bedding that includes paper pellets, pine shavings and straw or hay, at the bottom of the cage or aquarium. Cedar chips will need to be avoided because the urine that is absorbed will be harmful to your pet's feet. Newspaper strips will also need to be avoided because the ink used in the paper may harm your pet.

Dietary needs

Food for your pet can be provided by any pet shop in your area that has special food mixes that are healthy for them. However they will also need some fruits and vegetables to keep them healthy. The special mixes that you buy at the pet shop contains alfalfa, the mainstay of the pet's diet, but Vitamin C is also important to their dietary needs to help keep them healthy. The vitamin C supplement can be added their water bottle, and will help prevent the common ailments that afflict them. To prevent any gastrointestinal problems; avoid feeding your pet broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

Weight loss

Upper respiratory illnesses are the most common ailment you will face with your new pet. Cold and flu germs can be passed from humans to your pet, so if you are ill do not handle the pet. Antibiotics, especially penicillin can kill your pet, and they are allergic to the medications we use to combat colds and flu's. If your pet begins to lose weight, it is a sure sign that they are ill. Any discharge from the eyes or nose of your pet is also a sign that they are becoming ill. If your new pet exhibits any signs of illness you will want to immediately seek the advice and treatment of a veterinarian.

Your child can be responsible the general caring for guinea pigs such as feeding and cleaning the cage. On the other hand the guinea pig health issues will need to be monitored by an adult who can take action. The most important thing to remember is that any guinea pig illnesses should be treated by your veterinarian.
