Caring for your Blinds

Window blinds are a popular alternative to curtains. Blinds are easy to install, look modern and sophisticated, and can be much easier to clean than curtains.

However, not even window blinds are indestructible, and after a number of years, they can look a little ragged. One of the best ways of increasing the life of your window blinds is to take proper care of them.

When you purchase blinds, talk to the sales person or blind company about the proper care of the blinds. The maintenance will vary depending on the type of blind you've chosen and the material they're made of wood, aluminium, fabric or vinyl.

Most people prefer to choose light-coloured blinds, to keep the dcor of their homes light and airy. Remember, the lighter the color, the more easily dust shows up, and the more often you'll have to clean the blinds.

Read the manufacturers instructions carefully, as they should cover cleaning techniques. Some types of blinds need to be ultrasonically cleaned by a specialized company.

Blinds collect dust between their slats. You can vacuum your blinds when you clean the rest of your house. Simply unroll the blinds, attach a brush or upholstery tool to your vacuum cleaner, and clean the blinds. Try not to be too forceful as this may cause the slats to warp.

Once vacuumed, you can then wipe down your blinds with a warm, damp cloth. This should collect any remaining dirt and dust. For best results, wash with a cloth soaked in a tub of warm water with a little cleaning solution, squeezed out, then wipe down with a dry cloth. Don't roll the blinds up until they have completely dried.

Some smaller blinds can be washed in a tub. Remove the blinds from the window frame and unroll them into the tub. Wash carefully with warm water and cleaning liquid. Dry with a clean cloth. Allow the blinds to dry completely before attempting to rehang.

Real wooden blinds, which are usually quite expensive, may warp or crack if exposed to water or cleaning products. These will need to be vacuumed and dry dusted.

A little maintenance will keep your blinds in top condition for many years to come.
