Carpal Tunnel Computer
As I am sure you are aware carpal tunnel syndrome affects a lot of people who spend a great deal of time at the computer using a keyboard and mouse
. You may not be able to avoid the computer use because of your job or personal activities but there are some actions you can take to make your work area a bit safer and possibly reduce the potential for developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
The very first thing you want to look at is your chair. It is important that the chair's cushion is not too soft. You can test this by simply pushing your hand into the seat cushion, and if it touches the frame of your seat, it is too soft. The chair should also be adjustable so that you can set the height and back support at a comfortable angle. If the arm rests are adjustable as well, this is even better. You want to make sure that the back cushion is designed so that your lower back is pressed against it when you are sitting in a normal position. You want to avoid using a chair that will cause your butt to be at an angle which will result in bad posture and potential lower back pain.
The next thing you want to look at is the computer monitor. If it is placed in the right height position, it will help you to have good posture, reduce the strain on your neck and back muscles. The correct height for a computer monitor is such that when seated in a perfect upright posture, the center of your computer monitor should be at eye level, directly in front of you and NOT off to the side. The screen should also be at a distance of 18-30 inches away from your eyes.
The position of the keyboard should be in such a manner that allows your elbows to be close to your body to avoid reaching with your arms hanging down by your side freely. It is important that your elbows are vertical below your shoulders!
If you implement these simple tips you will be on your way to creating a user friendly work environment that minimizes the potential of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be cured if it is diagnosed it it's early stages. When you are experiencing the pain, the worse thing you can do is ignore it and hope that it will go away. It doesn't matter if the pain is slight or periodic, you may simply be in the early stages and it will get worse.
