If you determine that your needs for carpet cleaning are not sufficient to call a professional company, here are a few secrets that will help you maintain your carpet. The required materials/tools are: wet vacuum, various spotter cleaning solutions, household spoon, and clean white rag.

Note: do not extract liquid with a standard vacuum; it will burn out the motors. You can only extract liquids with a wet vacuum.

General spot cleaning technique:

If you have general dirt or spill spot in your carpet, the first thing you want to do is extract all loose, dry soil or liquid (if it's a spill) with your wet vac.

The second step is to put spotting solution directly onto the spot. Using a household spoon, you agitate the spotting solution into the carpet fibers to dig deep into the spot. Last, you use the wet vacuum to extract the spotting solution and the loosened stain.

Very important: the sooner you extract the soil from the carpet the better. Extract it ASAP!

Pet stain/odor removal:

Again, the sooner you remove these problems the better results you will have. If a pet stain is left long enough in the carpet, it might not ever come out.

Pour solution directly onto the spot, AND in an area about 2 inches outside of the spot. Pet stains can sink below the carpet into the padding and sometimes even below the padding. You must attack the urine beneath the carpet, so be liberal in applying the solution.

Instead of using a household spoon to agitate, use a brush. Agitate lightly; do not scrub so hard that you unfold the carpet fibers.

Apply clean white rag to the area to absorb cleaning solution and activated pet urine. Stand on the rag to apply maximum pressure for best absorption and results. If necessary, repeat steps until stain is completely gone.

Do not ever apply chemicals or solutions to your carpet that are not specifically designed for carpet cleaning. Never apply nail polish, or paint thinner to your carpet.
