When it comes to carry-on luggage, size really does matter. You've seen the "luggage sizers" at airports. Those are the boxes or metal bins that measure carry-on luggage. If your cabin luggage doesn't fit within the box you are told you must check the bag.

Seems simple, but when was the last time you saw someone actually use the sizer to check their luggage? If you are like me, never. There is a reason for that. Domestic airlines haven't been very strict about following their own cabin luggage restrictions. All the airlines have carry-on luggage rules; they just don't enforce them much.

Most of those bins have a length of 22 inches. However many bags rolled aboard airlines are 25 inches, even 26 or 28 at times. Most passengers get away with the larger size, but with packed flights and ever increasing luggage fees, the good old days of close enough' are coming to an end.

Airline gate personnel are now demanding passengers check oversized carry-ons. Now this shouldn't come as a big surprise, with checked baggage fees now so expensive -$25 for the first bag, $35 for the second-t here is now an economic incentive for the airline to enforce the long standing carry-on luggage rules#mce_temp_url#.

International airlines have always done that, most demanding carry-on luggage be no more than 22 inches long, some want 21 inches tops. Cabin luggage that size is often referred to as international size' because many of the world's airlines have long asked their passengers follow the shorter carry-on luggage rules.

22 inch luggage is widely available, but it is important for the consumer to know and understand the cabin luggage limits, because many luggage sales clerks are uninformed or misinformed. When measuring the luggage 21 inches is a better bet because it is more likely to fit in any overhead bin you are forced to use.

Remember too, most carriers have a combined size limit as well. A common rule is the carry-on bag must be no more than 22in x 14in x 9in for a total of 45 inches. Some airlines allow cabin luggage to be as much as a combined 46 or even 50 inches, but some set their carry-on luggage rules at 44 inches.

Although a couple inches may not seem like much, the difference is dramatic and packing light becomes more important than before. So after purchasing the new smaller luggage, pack the bag once just so you will know what you are going to be up against when packing for your first trip with the international sized luggage.
