Carthorpe Is More Than A Picturesque Village

Carthorpe is located in North Yorkshire, a small picturesque village and ancient parish in Hambleton

. The village is located four miles to the south of Bedale town and the population hovers at around three hundred inhabitants.

A small, but pretty village, there is plenty of spectacular Yorkshire countryside around to enjoy; the famous Dales and attractive agricultural areas. The area is blessed with some great gastropubs, including the Fox and Hounds Inn in Carthorpe itself. This award winning pub has been run by the same family for many years and dates back to the 1800s. It serves various local ales, beers and ciders and has a quality range of well priced food on offer.

In terms of activities within the village itself, there's a popular trekking centre and stables which offers classes and activities for riders of all abilities and ages. There are also a number of local interest groups including history, art and exercise groups. For those looking to the area as a potential location to live in, there are good local primary and secondary schools and it's certainly a great area for those who love the outdoors. Housing is a mix of new builds and traditional brick homes, some with extensive grounds or agricultural land attached.

For those heading to wider Bedale, a lively and bustling market town awaits. Bedale is an ancient town, in existence before the Norman's invaded England and with Roman ruins and a Saxon church amongst its historical haul. The town stayed fairly static until the early part of the eighteenth century, when the industrial revolution hit and had a huge impact on its activity and development. In the second half of the 1700s, buildings, roadways and general town conditions were greatly elevated and many of these original features are still on show and worth exploring.

The weekly market is held on Tuesday - dating back to the Market Charter laid down by Henry III in 1251. It's a lovely place to visit, with Georgian facades, cobblestone walkways and many interesting little independent shops and stalls and plenty of free parking. There are some good restaurants and takeaways, serving a range of local and international food.

Those who enjoy walking should check out the Heritage Trail - maps are available from the tourist information centre and there are plenty of local routes for rambling, cycling and horse riding. There is also a town museum, an interesting Ice House - which used to act as a refrigerator in the days before electricity, plenty of old architecture and some great pubs to enjoy some of Yorkshire's best local ales. Also check out the river for a peaceful walk and the interesting 'leech house' - a historical building which was used in the 18th century as part of local apothecary practices - history to test our modern sensibilities to the max! (Kids love it, needless to say...)

Both Carthorpe and Bedale are also both very accessible, just off the A1 and make great stopping points for those visiting the famous Yorkshire Dales.
