Alright, so you are a person of class? You read the relevant magazines, you know the relevant authors in your field. Who's who in your vertical. You know the producers and actors and authors and published critics- all the people that create influence in regards to your brand. Except... do you know the bloggers? The top tweeters, the youtube video blogs, the internet journalists? The world is changing. With the advent of the internet and it's increasing relevancy in the marketing world can you really keep track of all the potential influencers of your consumer base?
Here's a little anecdote for ya. I was working with a client trying to accomplish a relatively simple task. I was compiling a list of their usual people to contact and spread whatever message they were sending out at the time. I was curious so I popped the question "How exactly did you come up with this list?". Turns out that's just who they always contact. After a little research I came up with about a hundred more influencers that were just as important to their particular vertical as the people that populated the list they had given me. Here's the shocker- this was a big company with lots of resources, not some small inexperienced start-up.
So I had the idea to start working on influencer marketing. This field is relatively new and requires a lot of groundwork. Defining what an influencer is, deciding how relevant or irrelevant a particular social media site is, creating the software and proper formulas to parse all the data and analyzing that data to put it in it's proper context. It takes a lot of work to give companies a list of exactly who their influencers are in the market. It's kind of a big deal.
