The bones stored in Catacombs of Paris were exhumed from the Cemetery of Innocent in Les Halles, a district in Paris. This cemetery that was used for almost 1000 years was the cause for an infection that affected the neighbouring communities. The Council of State in Paris, following numerous complaints, decided to evacuate the cemetery and relocate the bones in the old quarries. After blessing the cemetery grounds, the process of bone exhuming and relocation commenced in April 1786 and was completed after two years.
