Catching Rainbow Trout

As a young man living in the Rocky Mountains if there is one thing I know about it is how to catch a rainbow trout

. This can be a tricky thing because this can vary greatly depending on many things. Each location requires a different method. Also, the season you are fishing for rainbow trout can greatly change the way you need to catch the fish.

When the salmon are spawning in the fall the trout love worms and salmon eggs. When the flies are hatching in the spring fly fishing works the best, especially when you use the particular fly that is hatching. In the summer, they really seem to like marsh mellows either the bright scented ones, anise and shrimp work the best for me, or the colored mini marsh mellows you buy at your local grocery store. I have heard they will even hit on brightly colored gummi worms, though I have never tried this method myself. Worms and corn are always pretty effective also. If you are trolling Rapallas work great, the colors they like often vary depending on location. In the winter if you are ice fishing, they like various colors of ice flies. Also, add a mealworm or grub, maybe even a marsh mellow. The key is to try different things until you find what they are hitting on.

If you are fishing from shore, try rigging your line a few ways to see how the rainbow trout are hitting. Put some weight on and see if they are hitting deep. If no luck try using a corky at the top of your hook or injecting your worm with air. This will make it float a little maybe they are hitting there. Sometimes a bobber works best if you want to try fishing closer to the top. Try jigging your line on occasion make your bait move around to tease them in. If no hits try bringing your line in a few feet at a time, maybe they are closer in. If ice fishing jigging is particularly important. If you are trolling cast towards the shoreline and slowly reel in, repeatedly casting and reeling.

You want to put eight to ten pound line on your reel. And, when you finally do hook a rainbow trout. Make sure you don't 'horse' the fish. Rainbows like to fight and run, let them run, reel in the line until it is taut, if they are fighting don't fight back, you can snap the line. But, also don't give them any slack, keep your line taut enough to not let them spit the hook but not so tight as to break the line. And always remember, you have to set the hook! When you feel the fish bite, jerk your pole back and up fast and hard to tighten the line and catch the hook. Happy fishing!
