Cats Are Not Disposable Like Tissues

This tiny Himalayan with azure eyes was guilty of being afraid..

. afraid to use her litter box. Why? Because her box was in another room and to access it, she had to run the gauntlet of large dogs. Instead of taking that risk, she had begun to defecate under her human companions' bed. Sin of sins.

Since the vet had ruled out a health problem, I talked with the current human companions explaining there was a simple way they could likely change the cat's behavior... and make everybody happy. They told me they wanted nothing more to do with her. They had raised her from a kitten but now were "sick" of her. They stated they were unwilling to put a litter box in their bedroom even for a short time, much less slowly move it into another accessible room, without dogs, as she used it.

When I arrived at the veterinary clinic, the tiny cat had just been shaved of at least a year's worth of heavy mats. With pupils so wide her eyes looks like caverns, she hunkered in her cage, shaking, half hidden under a fluffy towel. I sat down by the cage, talked softly to her, gently petted her exposed back, then picked her up and cuddled her. She did not resist my advances. At home with me she has religiously used the litter box. A month later I received similar call. This time a 14-year-old was to be euthanized because her female human was going on a trip and her husband would not care for the cat. This sweet throwaway joined the other.

There is only one good reason to euthanize an animal companion: a significant decease in the quality of its life. This could be due to illness, chronic pain, severe disability, or significant neglect or abuse. But inconvenience is not a reason to end a companion animal's life.
