Cause For Anxiety In The Northwest

For most of us suffering through sixty-degree temperatures and depressing weeks of

rain in June the weather forecast in the Pacific Northwest is a daily source of frustration. But for Seattle heating companies the longer the cold weather stays the better. After all, the few of them that do air conditioning as well dont make a lot of money from that side of the business during the few short weeks of heat in an average year.

Its not like Seattle is chock full of people who crave the sunshine. In fact, an increasing portion of the population has actually moved from a sunnier climate - such as Southern California - exchanging muggy heat for the pristine beauty and cleaner air of the Pacific Northwest. Were a group who would rather pull a jacket on to stay warm on a cool day than bake in the suffocating heat of a hotter climate, and we dont mind a few clouds.

Quite the opposite. Most Seattleites like the rain, at least to some extent. Those gloomy, misty mornings when we drive through the rain, facing a line of oncoming headlights against the gradually brightening backdrop of a moody sky have a kind of romance to them. We are drawn together and, to an extent, we bond through the shared experience of enduring the hardship of rain and a lack of vitamin D.

But the unpredictable weather thats been going on the last few years is different, and it has quite a few residents of Seattle on edge. Its not that we mind the rain. But when the wet weather might last until the end of June one year and then stop in mid-April the next year; when theres snow in May at sea level; and when one years summer ends in August and another years summer continues well into October, were beginning to feel as though the climate is irregular - and wonder why.

Some climatologists say that this unpredictability is just part of the way that weather works. Weather patterns change over long periods of time, and during the course of that change there are periods of unpredictability in any climate in any part of the world.

Other climatologists, of course, paint a much different picture, blaming the increasingly bizarre weather we seem to be having on global climate change brought on by greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and overpopulation. In the view of many of those climatologists the unpredictability is not just one part of a natural process of change, but rather it is a harbinger of disastrous climate change that is hovering on the horizon.

The problem is that, despite significant numbers of scientists on both sides of that argument, the verdict on global climate change is still very much out. That leaves us unsure of what the unpredictable weather means. Should we just batten down the hatches for a few years, or should we actually be worried? Not knowing is whats making people anxious.

That anxiety probably wont go away, since it is unlikely that the scientific community will come to any kind of consensus on climate change. Well just have to keep biting our fingernails while the Seattle heating industry does well every time we have unpredictable rain and wind continue through June.
