Causes And Action To Take On Bad Breath

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone only to find their breath

has a horrible smell? It's almost impossible not to react with a look of revulsion to the sudden assault to your senses. It's a struggle to continue the conversation when all you can seem to focus on is a good reason to turn away and go some place else where you can breathe freely.

The natural response to the odor is almost involuntary. This is a classic social situation where a person feels compelled to escape the scene without being rude. Bad breath is a difficult issue to deal with, but it needs to be addressed not only by the affected individual, but also by those with whom he or she comes into regular contact, especially friends, relatives or coworkers. It would be better to be made aware of the situation than to be blissfully ignorant of it and continue to go on unknowingly offending others. It would be a kindness in the long run to tip someone off that they have a problem with their breath.

Who's Responsible?

Another way of putting it is WHAT'S responsible? For the most part, volatile sulfur compounds are the culprit for the odor we associate with bad breath. Anyone who's caught a whiff of rotten eggs has also experienced the power of sulfur on the sense of smell. These compounds are the by-product of bacteria feeding not only on food residue on the teeth, but also on the naturally occurring coating in the mouth and throat. Left unchecked, this bacterial activity continues to the point of producing that all too familiar odor no one wants to have.

So what to do about bad breath? First off, everyone is responsible to perform regular hygiene habits by flossing and brushing their teeth as a way that will naturally help prevent the occurrence of bad breath. Equally as important, brushing the tongue or better yet, using a tongue scraper should also be included in regular oral care activity. Sometimes, however, basic measures of prevention are not enough. Smoking, drinking alcohol or having foods like onions and garlic as a regular part of the diet will have an obvious effect, but a diet especially high in protein can also be a contributor to bad breath. Medical conditions such as diabetes, gum disease and chronic dry mouth may also be involved. If the situation is out of control, a person would be well advised to consult their doctor to work toward a solution to the problem, as it may be a sign of a hidden health issue.

What Can Be Done?

Bad breath is a matter that should not be ignored. Besides making one more socially agreeable, your good oral health has an effect on your health in general. It is medically known that this condition can have potential long term consequences in the case of gum disease in particular. The presence of this bacterium is a source of chronic inflammation and can possibly cause immune reactions to the point of contributing to serious conditions such as heart disease or stroke. At the very least this situation is a constant challenge to the body's natural defenses and is best handled as soon as possible.

Proper diagnosis of the root cause of bad breath, which can be obtained by a visit to the doctor and/or dentist, is the first logical step in solving this dilemma. Their expertise will enable you to look systematically at your lifestyle, diet, personal habits and health history as a way to find clues to the problem. Further tests may be necessary to pin down the exact cause, or it may be as simple as changing the type of toothpaste you are using. There are also specialized treatments available that may include the use of probiotic bacteria to reduce the substances in the mouth that the more harmful bacterial feed on and therefore help prevent bad breath in that manner. Simply drinking more water to flush out the mouth, chewing sugarless gum or using sugarless mints to stimulate saliva production are also actions a person can easily take besides regular oral care. Any effort you make will be well worth it both to those around you and especially for you and your continued good health!
