Causes Of Obesity: High Fructose Corn Syrup
One of the hidden causes of obesity is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
It has already been proven that there is a direct correlation between high fructose corn syrup and insulin resistance and also obesity. Visceral fat is the cause of the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is what leads to hormone imbalances, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
But there is more to it.
Causes of Obesity: Insatiability
Studies have shown without any question that people, in general, are eating much more food every year. It is not just an increase in caloric intake and/or eating more high calorie foods. People are eating more poundage of food over time.
Why?
High fructose corn syrup is one of the main culprits. Within us, there are two hormones called leptin and ghrelin. Ghrelin is called the hunger hormone because it makes us hungry. Leptin is the opposite hormone. It is the hormone that makes us feel full.
High fructose corn syrup suppresses leptin production. Thus a person can consume food that has high fructose corn syrup and still feel very hungry.
High fructose corn syrup is in more and more food as the years go on. I will talk more about how the consumption of the HFCS has increased over time.
Ghrelin is secreted and stimulated by an empty stomach. Leptin is secreted by a full one. The problem is that there is an ever increasing amount of liquid products that use HFCS as the sweetener. Pepsi and Dr. Pepper and Gatorade are all sweetened by HFCS.
When liquids are consumed the digestive tract is not going to send the same signals to the brain to create the same amount of leptin and ghrelin as when solid foods are consumed. There is more ghrelin produced and less leptin produced. When HFCS is added to the liquids it further suppresses leptin. This causes greater hunger because not only is there not solid foods but there is also HFCS that stop someone from feeling full.
So HFCS is a major contributor to the rise in how much food is consumed.
If people were full they just wouldn't eat more. But people are not feeling full on the same amount of food. They are getting hungrier sooner and with more voracity.
Causes of Obesity: Fructose and Liver Malfunction
The liver is a very important organ and gland in your body. It is also central to the causes of obesity. All hormones go through the liver. The liver also processes starches, carbohydrate, sugar, alcohol, fats and proteins. When the liver is not functioning well, food is not processed well and toxins in the body are also not processed and neutralized.
It is a central organ in weight loss. One of the main reasons my method works so well is because I focus heavily on getting the liver clean and functioning well. This is because food cannot be metabolized correctly if the liver is not functioning correctly.
Causes of Obesity: Hormone Imbalances From Over-Taxed Liver
Also, if the thyroid hormones such as T3 and T4 are not able to be used correctly, the metabolic rate of the body can drop. Some people end up getting synthetic thyroid from doctors when all they need is to get the liver to process the hormones correctly. Hormone imbalances are one of the main contributing causes of obesity.
What does HFCS have to do with this? Fructose is routed directly to the liver and it is processed by the liver and not the cells like sugar and/or glucose are processed. In fact, the liver is the only organ that can metabolize and do anything with fructose. The liver turns fructose to body fat.
The liver can store an unlimited amount of glycogen (storage form of glucose). Athletes have shown this. Glycogen does not become toxic to the liver.
The same is not true for fructose. Especially chronic fructose ingestion. Once the liver becomes toxic or is inundated with toxins it cannot do its job.
Causes of Obesity: Fructose Causes Metabolic Syndrome
To make matters worse, the fat produced by the liver is created IN the liver. This directly affects the way the liver works. Right off the bat, hormones become imbalanced. Immediately after the liver starts getting fat deposits within it, the fat starts building around it. Then visceral fat, the fat that builds inside the abdominal cavity starts to grow. This internal, visceral fat is the dangerous fat. It will inevitably lead to diabetes, obesity and heart disease if it is left unchecked.
Causes of Obesity: Fructose is Hidden in Many Common Foods
The part where this becomes very insidious is that high fructose corn syrup is in so many different foods. It has snuck into the ingredients list of so many common foods that we eat and we dont think twice about it.
Let me give you an example. Lets say you are going to eat some steak. It is organic so it is chemical free. But you want some steak sauce. So you get a bottle of A-1. Look at the ingredients and you see high fructose corn syrup. So you put that down and you get Worcestershire Sauce. You look at that and lo and behold, it too has high fructose corn syrup. BBQ sauce, same thing. Part of the reason high fructose corn syrup is one of the causes of obesity is because it is hidden in so many things we eat!
You are at a restaurant and you want to lose weight and eat healthy. So you get a salad. What are the three most common dressings? Ranch, Balsamic vinaigrette and Italian Dressing. Each of these have high fructose corn syrup.
You want to make things healthy for your kids. So you look for and buy juices that say natural juice. These have high fructose corn syrup. And again, because the fructose is being consumed in a liquid it is more potent at increasing hunger.
This is by no means an entire explanation of all the causes of obesity but it is one of the major causes of obesity that people are not aware of. It is a discussion of one of the causes of obesity in society that are hidden.
