Circumcision at an early age acts as a deterrent of penile cancer with studies indicating tremendous drop in the number of chances of contracting cancer when circumcision has been performed in infancy or childhood compared to it being performed in teens or not being performed at all. Age is one another factor that is associated with the increase in the risk of penile cancer. With age the risk factor increases as most of the cases diagnosed with penile cancer are above the age of 60 years.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to increase the risk of developing penile cancer. Human papillomavirus causes genital warts which can be malignant and this can be controlled by vaccines as they lower the risk of human papillomavirus and hence a reduced risk of penile cancer. Ultra violet light and a drug called psoralen used in the treatment of psoriasis have been found to increase the risk of penile cancer. Due to the decrease in the risks of developing cancer ending the use of tobacco for chewing or smoking are considered as one of the foremost steps.

Summary: Though affecting a minor population cancer affected people in the developed countries, penile cancer forms a tenth of all the cancer affected patients in the continents of Asia, Africa and South America. Though the causes are not well identified, risks can definitely be reduced by identifying causes and maintaining proper hygiene.
