. In contrast to migraine headaches, which account for less than 10% of all headaches, cervicogenic headaches tend to be a far more common. However, given the many varying types and degrees of headaches, a victim should never attempt to self diagnose as the proper treatment is truly predicated on an accurate diagnosis. For example, treatment for migraine headaches often includes dietary changes in conjunction with other forms of treatment, whereas cervicogenic and tension headaches tend to respond very well from chiropractic adjustments combined with soft tissue therapy.

Cervicogenic headaches, as the name suggests, typically stem from issues such as misalignment, improper position, poor posture, and other causes occurring in the neck. Being the narrowest part of the body and having the duty of carrying a heavy load (the head), the neck performs best when it has all the right pieces for correct function. In this case those pieces are correct structure. The best way to determine the actual structure and position of the neck is to have an x-ray taken. This will help determine several key features including joint angles, curve angles, presence of degenerative changes, etc. Another way to determine the quality of the structure of the neck is to have orthopedic tests performed. These tests should be highly specific and tend to rule out unrelated issues and rule in related issues that are highly specific. These initial steps are crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment of these forms of headaches.

Headaches are indeed a widespread problem affecting millions, if not more, worldwide. The challenge with headaches is that they are so debilitating to the victim. They truly are inhibited in their daily routine, where simple concentration becomes difficult. The challenge of getting through a daily routine while experiencing headaches becomes increasingly challenging, creating a vicious cycle of pain and frustration. With cervicogenic headaches, the victim will typically feel a pounding pain that moves from the neck to the head and often in the pre-orbital region (behind the eyes).

The good news is that these types of headaches are managed quite well with a series of chiropractic sessions. During these sessions, a prudent doctor of chiropractic (assuming an accurate diagnosis was made) should transition treatment from acute care (removing the patient from their state of pain) to rehabilitation (actively modifying the structure) and finally to a state of maintenance (infrequent visits to ensure that the structure of the neck is not being compromised, especially by old lingering habits). This strategy has a proven successful track record and will surely make a difference in your quality of life.
