Causes of Ovarian Cysts – Understanding The Root Cause Of Ovarian Cysts
Any time that a health issue involved reproductive systems
, it's common to experience a good deal of concern. However, not every reproductive issue is as alarming as initially suspected.
In fact, things like ovarian cysts can be quite normal. In some cases, there are serious issues involved, while other cysts may actually crop up during a normal monthly cycle and then disappear altogether.
Understanding the cause of ovarian cysts can help a woman to accurately assess what is going on and why it is occurring. It can also diminish some of the worry associated with being informed that cysts are present.
Signs of Cysts
There are several common signs that may indicate that ovarian cysts are present. First, abdominal pain is often present when there are cysts in the ovary and surrounding tissue.
In addition, your menstrual periods may be affected, increasing in intensity and length. Digestive issues may be noticeable, including experiencing pain when straining on the toilet. Finally, some women with ovarian cysts have painful sexual relations.
While these are all common indications, it's also possible that only mild symptoms may be present, or none at all. You also may have symptoms and actually mistake a cyst for something like normal pregnancy.
Common Causes of Ovarian Cysts
There are two common causes of ovarian cysts that are designated as functional. This means that, while a cyst is present, it isn't necessarily abnormal or worrisome in any way. Rather, it is the result of a regular hormonal cycle. If either of these is the cause of your cyst, it may disappear on its own without medical intervention or treatment of any kind.
During a normal reproductive cycle, follicles swell with fluid as an egg develops. Normally, the egg is released and the fluid is shed. However, in some instances, either the egg is retained or the fluid does not fully dissipate. This can cause a small cyst to form.
However, the body will probably absorb the unneeded tissue and the cyst will disappear. If the egg is released, however, it's still possible that a cyst may develop from tissue that is still present in the ovary.
These cysts are designated as luteal. They may be filled with blood. It's possible that a luteal ovarian cyst may burst, causing pain or even bleeding in the area.
Pathological Cysts
Another category of ovarian cysts is designated as pathological. This means that they are not the product of normal hormonal issues, but are created by abnormalities in the reproductive system.
While pathological cysts are more troublesome, they aren't always particularly dangerous or life-threatening. Some cysts of this type actually are comprised of human tissue, including hair, nail or skin tissues. This is not, of course, normal; however, these ovarian cysts usually are not cancerous.
In fact, they may be able to remain in a woman's womb for many years with no adverse effects. Having a normal tissue tumor is considered to be a bigger problem, in fact. These tumors often grow either inside or outside the uterus area and can increase in size rapidly. While also not usually cancerous, they will probably need to be removed.
Women who already suffer from conditions that are hormonal in nature or otherwise affect the reproductive system are more likely to suffer from all types of ovarian cysts. Endometriosis is closely connected with various types of ovarian cysts, as is the hormonal condition PCOS. These can also contribute to, or be one of the causes of ovarian cysts.
