Causes of Psoriasis of Skin

Psoriasis is a condition of the skin that is little understood. The underlying cause appears to be an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to produce new skin cells at an accelerated rate that leads to the inflammation and itching that is characteristic with psoriasis. Normally skin cells take 28 to 30 days to grow to maturity, but in people who have an outbreak of psoriasis this process is shortened to 3 to 6 days.

What happens in the case of psoriasis is that a certain group of white blood cells called T-cells goes into hyperactivity. The immune system seems to actually attack the skin and trigger many different events that leads to the skin cells multiplying many times more rapidly than they are supposed to. The dead skin cells then begin to stack up on the surface of the skin.

Stress for example is one major cause of the many physical discomforts we often experience today and although stress is normal, going beyond unmanageable stress can lead to flare-ups or worsening of the symptoms of psoriasis. Of course, to deal with it, you have to manage stress in your life by exercising regularly and practicing meditation.

Immense research has been performed to get to the bottom of the cause of psoriasis. However, we are not sure about what the main cause of it is. It can either be a failed immune system or unexplained skin growth and regeneration. Every theory has its own merits and demerits and should be followed after due consideration only.

If you have psoriasis you might have noticed that it is worse in the colder months. This is because of two reasons. The skin loves humid air because its main job it to keep to inside of your body away from the outside world. Our bodies are over 75 percent water so it only makes sense that the skin does better it humid conditions.

Zinc deficiency seems to be an affliction of modern times when our diet and lifestyles have changed dramatically. Unfortunately, lower levels of zinc are now found in the soil which lowers the levels in our food. Our highly processed, refined foods and our over-consumption of sugar and carbohydrates all contribute to the decreasing levels of zinc in our diet. Vegetarians, especially, can be at risk of zinc deficiency because the main source of zinc is meat.

It is believed that psoriasis is inherited in many people. Scientists still don't know how or why, but about one third of people with psoriasis have it in their family history. As an example, the risk of getting psoriasis increases if one parent has it. The risk is substantially higher if both parents have the disease.

A sudden onset of psoriasis may last only for a few moments, although attacks may occur repeatedly at intervals. Regular treatments are likewise known to induce only momentary relief. In harsher, pertinacious cases, some skin-care specialists often recommend the application of any of the various adrenal-cortex steroids (specifically, a corticosteroid). But these cogent medications can actually cause serious side effects.

John Armour, Professor of Human Genetics in the Institute of Genetics, together with Master of Research student Emma Dannhauser discovered around 30 per cent of people with psoriasis have a family history of the condition. It has long been known that genetic predisposition is an important cause of psoriasis, but it is only recently that scientists have begun to discover the causes of psoriasis and the exact nature of the variations that give rise to this predetermined condition.

A healthy immune system would fight off the foreign invaders such as fungus, viruses and bacteria with the help of antibodies. The white blood cells originally produce such antibodies along with the chemicals that assist in the process. In case of psoriasis, the white blood cells, also referred to as the T-cells, would go into hyperactivity.

Psoriasis is caused by the extremely rapid proliferation of cells in the skin. Cells in psoriatic lesions multiply at rate 1,000 times faster than normal skin, even faster than cells in skin cancers. In people with psoriasis, even blemish-free skin replenishes itself at 2-1/2 times the normal rate.
